Journal 1- Victoria Farrar

To me, writing is a way of conveying meaning, any meaning, in written format. There are many different types of writing styles used to convey meaning. When someone writes, their words explain their thoughts, feelings and ideas. They use words and text to express themselves, their stories, fantasies, emotions and inner thoughts. Throughout high school, I was assigned to writing in one style and to simply analyze the text assigned. Yet, at home, I enjoyed writing in my private journal about my own thoughts, troubles, successes, concerns, goals, vision and to simply express my personal self on paper. Writing successfully requires a sense of organization of thoughts and ideas to express meaningful dialogue with the audience. When writing, there is always a message, whether it be a major message or something that is minute the writer is trying to convey. I consider my writing successful when it has completely conveyed my feelings, along with my ideas and thoughts, completely.

For myself, I see myself as more of an emotional writer. It is easy for me to fluidly explain what I see and feel and how things may effect me and others. I am a writer that enjoys looking from within the subject, to actually see the truths and secrets that some may hold, digging deeper into what makes us human. Key terms that define writing to me include; vision, interwoven, convoluted, dynamic, mysterious, diverse and depth. Writing is something that is made specific by the writer. It is always changing and always linked to some aspect of life.

The main argument seen in this text is about the originality of a person’s work; Is it really original or just another version of something once said? And is it important to support non-original pieces? This article showed me that many times when we are writing, we are always conveying information that is known, but just in a different way. I also realized that we are taught that our original thought is more important than the information that is already available and perfected. I believe that by teaching students, like myself, that using the sources given and rearranging them into new ideas, helps write a more creative piece of work. Although the information may not be original, it is an original rework of thoughts from information given. This article is successful in conveying the appropriate meaning, thoughts, feelings and ideas of writing in the modern age. It gives a wealth of information and makes clear what point they had to writing the article. I always thought of writing as a way you express yourself in your environment. This article helped me see that this may be true, but it is also a rewrite of something once said. Writing in class or on information already available to others requires you to rewrite information you know. The article did not necessarily change my idea of writing, however, it has supported my ideas and broadened my view regarding aspects of real world scenarios. Most writing terms relate to a wide list of different texts and writing styles. One term I would consider taking out or changing would be diverse. This is because writing is not always diverse, it is sometimes the same information written in another way.
