Based on what I read I see genre is the overall form, style, and content of text. I previously had a fairly good definition of genre but reading this I think helped me understand a little better.
The three ideas that spoke to me the most were that “Genres are contractions of groups, over time, usually with the impact or explicit sanction of organizational or institutional power.” “Thus, to understand the full range of situations a document in a particular genre may be used in and the full set of meanings that might be attributed…” “That is to say that writing does not simply record thought or knowledge but rather that writing has the capacity to actually produce thought and knowledge.”
My understanding for genre and writing has changed after reading the text because it has made me think of the content of writing in much different ways. While reading this text it approaches the genre and writing at several different angles and made me think how writing has been like this all along I just never noticed it.
There are no text I disagree with.
The two text I found were both sports articles from The New York Times, the first article https://www.nytimes.com/2017/06/27/sports/hockey/nico-hischier-new-jersey-devils-top-nhl-draft-pick. uses the multimodal concept because it has pictures relating to the article and then the article describes them. It also uses the writing represents the world, events, and feelings because this hockey player is being drafted from a different country. The next article https://www.nytimes.com/2017/06/24/sports/hockey/connor-mcdavid-sidney-crosby. also uses the multimodal concept because the text explains the pictures in the article.
