Writing Theory - Niko Traylor

The first connection I attempted to look for was my key terms and how big they were in the word cloud. I expected to see the words instantly stand out, but to my surprise they did not stand out too much from the other words within the word cloud. The because word in my word cloud was obviously writing. The second biggest words included: work, successful, believe, and ideas. I think I do not see a connection to the key terms and the word cloud because I have a different opinion on writing than others do. I believe that writing is more free and expressive than the mainstream view. To me, writing is a very powerful form of expression and should be used to say what the author would like to say without and restrictions or guidelines. With that in mind, I do not believe it is important for my key words to match my word cloud. Looking at my word cloud makes me think about how loose the term writing can be used. The most intriguing conclusion I can draw from this is that writing can take on many definitions and is not strictly defined.

Theory of writing

Writing is a form of expression and up to the creators discretion on how they would like to write. Writing can be used to connect people together, give signals or messages, offer another form of communication, and more. Writing comes in all types of forms as well such as books, labels, messages, even a kid trying to write on the wall. Taking the kid for an example, even if he does not put together a logical sentence or word he is still expressing himself and writing what he wants to. In conclusion, writing is a form of expression and comes in many types of forms and has many types of purposes.

Notes during comparing:
  • Basic words related to writing = more relevant vs my key terms on writing not being very big on my word cloud
  • "Express" seemed to be consistent across all theories
  • A constant theme of communication also follows many theories
Wrap up reflection

In conclusion, I think my theory of writing is not too far off from my classmates. Before looking at others theories I thought my theory of writing would be completely different from others because I believe writing to be so free. In reality, many others think the same when they theorize writing. It is useful to have a theory of writing because setting a base for writing in your head will help you become a better writer in the future. If you know what you think about writing and what kind of writer you are then you should be confident enough to better your writing skills. On that note, I think of myself as a very free writer, I do not like to stick to one style. Depending on the situation or the flow of the text I like to switch up my style of writing, but only for two major reasons. The first reason is because I believe writing should be free and nonrestricted and up to the author on however they would like to write. Secondly, I do not know much about the "rules" and "guidelines" behind writing so I go with instinct or the flow of the text most of the time.
