Journal 2 - Niko Traylor

I previously defined genre as a way to categorize text into subject groups based on the texts criteria. This was a way for readers to determine easier which text they would prefer to read. After reading about all the seven concepts I realize that genre goes much farther than that. I now define genre as a complex way to grasp a text at the authors discretion. A text can fall into multiple genres and there are many components that determine what genre a text falls under.
First off, I take away the idea that genre is more complex than just putting a text into a category. I see now that genre requires many more components and is determined by the author which genre or genres they would like their text to be in. Secondly, this text has made me realize how important genre can be to a text. Readers determine which text they prefer and they usually start out by picking a genre, so for an author placing the text as the right genre is crucial. Lastly, I take away from this text is the idea that do not write your text to be a certain genre, write your text how ever you want to write your text and let it fall into genres.
I understand genre to be more important for readers and authors than I previously did. Readers determine which text to read mostly by starting off with the genre and the author classifies their text as a genre or many genres.
I did not have enough previous knowledge to formulate a strong opinion before reading this text, so I can not disagree throughly with any claims.
