Before reading, I understood genre to be the type or style of a piece of literature based on the content. After reading the seven concepts, I now understand genre is more than just the style of a piece of literature, it includes things such as the audience or in what context the piece is being written in.
From reading this text I understand genre is a broad term, and although there are lots of genres and ways to define writing, genre is very broad in how a piece can be determined for a genre. Also, a piece of literature can have several genres, it is not bound to only one. And I think the most important idea is that the idea of what a genre is is always changing. New genres are constantly developed as new forms of writing emerge, for example, sci-fi.
This text helped me more thoroughly understand what genre truly is. It’s not just a category that you choose from when trying to define a text, its a characteristic of a piece of literature that is created by the author and audience through the style of the text. It’s not as specific as I thought either, a text can be various genres based off the style even if it does not appear to be that genre to the reader, it’s based off interpretation of the text.
No, there did not appear to be any concepts or claims in the text that I disagreed
with, everything stated just allowed me to gain a better understanding of how
genre works.
I chose both of these articles because they’re about my two favorite comedy
shows. Both of the articles are written in an informal and comedic sense, to
match the style of both of the shows. Although the articles aren’t telling jokes,
they can still be considered in the comedy genre because of what the articles are
about and also based off the audience.
Truthfully, nothing really confused me or didn’t make sense. The ideas and
messages were clearly portrayed and easily understood.
