Writing Cloud - Writing Theory - Jenna Byrd

Theory:

Some connections I found from my word cloud that relate to my key terms include interpretation, story, and escape. The other three terms from my list are however not included in my writing word cloud.  Before creating the word cloud, I expected to see all of my key terms show up on the word cloud, but this was not the case. Since I have never used a word cloud before I did not know what to expect, but I would never have guessed that the word "writing" would be the most prominent along with piece. I would have assumed I used "plagiarism," "text," or "assemblage," the most throughout my journal piece. I believe that since I did not use my key terms throughout my journal 1 entry, my word cloud accurately represented the words I used instead. This is surprising and therefore on the next journal entry I plan to incorporate my key terms more often. This will enhance my learning. Although the word cloud isn't an accurate representation of my thoughts in the journal because it only points out specific words and not thoughts, it still showed me that I should be incorporating more of my key terms into my thoughts and ideas I write in the journal. Next time I will include these terms more and hopefully they will start to make an appearance on my next word cloud. Looking at the word cloud prompts me to make changes in my key terms, but I will not change them because the key terms I originally chose still apply to my theory of writing. This exercise intrigues  me to find out more about my key terms and ways to accurately and efficiently include them in my ideas, thoughts, and theories of writing.

In my opinion, writing is an expressive outlet that enables each writer to personalize their experiences, emotions, thoughts, and research in a format of their choice that might lay out a solution to a problem or show the process to creating something beautiful. Writing can be a story; it can assess reoccurring situations and offer advice with how to proceed; writing can teach or inform with didactic qualities; it can also be an outlet for someone to escape from reality.

Step 4:

When meeting with my group, some similarities in thoughts we had were that writing is a unique form of communication that gives support to an author's thoughts and creations, allowing the writer to be as personable as possible in the piece. Since there are no constraints to writing whatever anyone pleases, a piece of text can adopt very specific, personable traits in order to teach the reader of some past experience, inform, or teach a lesson. We both agreed that writing is also a time stamp. I reflected on my theory that writing can assess occurring problems and offer advice or solutions that worked in the past; my partner agreed and argued that writing is an important form of documentation, so much so that we humans look at pieces written in 100 B.C. to find advice from. Writing is very historical as its sometimes didactic qualities have the ability to teach for thousands of years later. My sharing group although did not mention one of my thoughts about writing which is that it is an escape from reality. When an author expresses himself, the reader has the ability to delve into the novel or piece as an outlet from their reality. Because our group agreed on all of our ideas on the theory of writing, no questions arise, but we only built off of each other's ideas to add more support for our ideas.

Step 5:

Before this project, I would have never considered a theory of writing. I would have just continued to write how my teachers instructed and went on with the class. After this activity, I have a clear idea that writing means so much more than formal argumentative style pieces taken for a grade in class. I can actually understand why people might write for fun. Maybe they want to express their feelings or give advice to generations to come about past experiences in their lives. A theory of writing can help me so much in classes to come when I delve into further analysis of other subjects and ideas. Also, with Florida State being a major research center, having a theory of writing can help me create those pieces with ease (or at least help out a little bit). I still do not see myself as a writer however. One time I tried to write a book and finished the story on two pages. I have a great appreciation for writers as I could not do it myself. If I did have to chose one form of writing I enjoy, I would have to say fiction as it allows me greater opportunity to explore my imagination and express myself. Later in life if I have a lot of free time, I might consider trying to write again. I might try poetry. I have always had an interest in the way poets use so much figurative language or style their poem's design to look like the meaning. All writers are intelligent and knowing more about the writing theory helps me connect more with the author's purpose for writing the piece.
