Field Journal 4

Through out the reading Gee constantly uses the word discourse which he sees as a set of characteristics which define a discourse community. She also describes these traits as inherently segregational in a sense, where the bond formed by these discourse groups inherently pushes out people who aren't in the discourse community. These discourses separate the members of the discourse communities and designate them as a distinct unified entity driving their agendas.

For project two I am interested in a hospitals physicians discourse community. The doctors of a hospital have a distinct language which is unique to its members and there is an interesting culture which is directly related to the members of a hospital. To join this discourse community one must complete years of medical school and once hired as a physician must incorporate themselves into the community and culture of the hospital which they intend to work for. Writing is essential for relaying and communicating information among doctors to attain the highest level of care. This could be in the form of charts or new technologies which advance the profession and allow the hospital to enhance it's care.

I have always been interested in the medical field and the process of saving lives. When volunteering at the local hospital I always looked up to the doctors and heard their lingo longing to be a part of their group. I was not only inspired by doctors in the hospital setting but also my uncle who is a physician specializing in internal medicine and the dean of admissions at the University of Miami school of medicine. These factors drive me toward medical school and the future career of being a physician.
