Journal 4 Marissa Latouche

Gee repeats the term discourse multiple times throughout the text. Gee also uses the word social multiple times as well. The reader can clearly understand the importance of social aspects in discourse communities. Gee describes discourse as a social association of language to specific groups that are pertinent to the group at hand. Acquisition is also discussed frequently by Gee. Acquisition is defined as the learning of a habit or skill. Acquisition is an accumulated habit while learning is more constant and always happening. Writing plays a crucial role in discourse. In class today we discussed different discourse communities. One example, is inside jokes in friend groups. In all friend groups that are jokes that happen in certain moments that can only be understood by the certain friend group. I have always been interested political science which is my major as well as an interest in my life. I think I will fit well in this discourse community and will understand the language after gaining more knowledge in the area.
