Journal 5 - Christopher Harb

How do Yancey and Taczak each define reflection?

Yancey states that when she refers to reflection she is stating that,”the processes by which we know what we have accomplished and by which we articulate accomplishement and the products of those processes.”

Taczak defines it as “a mode of inquiry: a deliberate way of systematically recalling writing experiances to reframe the current writing situation”

How does Yancey build on others’ scholarship to define reflection?

Yancey cites multiple sources on the beginning of page six. She starts using these sources and builds up the word reflection to the reader using this assemblage of sources. “It can  mean revision, of ones goals, or more oftenn, of ones work(camp 2993; Weiser); it can mean self assesment, sometimes orietned to the gap between intention and accomplishement(conway); it can mean an anylsis of learning that takes place in and beyond the writing class.(paulson, paulson, and meyer)”

According to both Yancey and Taczak, what does reflection enable writers to do?

In yanceys text she says reflection can enable writers to analyze and learn of what takes place in and beyond the writing class. And it entails a looking forward to goals we might attain.

Taczak says,”helps writers begin assessing themselves as writers, recognizing and building on their prior knowledge about writing.”

How might we understand reflection in connection with each of the key terms we have discussed so far—genre, audience, purpose, and discourse community?

Reflection takes place in every aspect of life whether we like it or not. If we want to look at each of these keys terms in every aspect of that term there is someone who it can apply to that has relected on what they are doing or what they have done in the past for whatever reason to take it and grow. No matter the case reflection can take place differently for everyone so there is no specific definition for each of these key terms because everyone can and will reflect on their own things differently.

Finally, please compose (as opposed to merely finding) a visual that you believe will help us to better understand reflection. This can be an image, a chart, a gif, video, etc. that you have created. Write a few sentences about what you hope readers will understand about reflection by looking at your visual.

The peice I chose was specific in meaning. I chose my essay that I used to apply for college and it is specific because it takes a moment in my life when I was in high school. It screenshots my life at that time and my capabilities as a writer. I hope to see what I can accomplish in the future and this opens my eyes to what I accomplished in the past and what I am capable of moving forward.
