I see Gee using the terms discourse and learning a lot through out the passage relating them in different ways. He also uses the terms intimates and non-intimates in a few different places through out the text. Gee describes discourse as social groups using a specific language that is pertinent to the group. He also defines learning as a process that involves conscious knowledge gained through teaching. Gee focuses on the terms by incorporating them into the text in multiple places and uses them in different scenarios to give you a better understanding. He uses intimates and non-intimates to describe the way we connect with people and how well we relate too them on ideas and knowledge, which I personally think was a great way to explain it. The connections I see is we have been discussing these item individual and Gee puts them all together in his article and explains them in a different way. He shows all the different ways these terms relate and it helped me to understand his definitions better.
The discourse community am and interested in is the field of accounting and finance. People in this discourse use the language of numbers and specially have a lot of financial terms that are used frequently through out their community. Most people who are not in this field would not be able to understand the language that is used around a financial or accounting firm and when they speak with clients they have to dumb things down in a sense. To become a member of this community you would have to earn a degree or become a certified accounted and understand the principles of money and numbers. Writing in this discourse plays a role through emails communicating to clients and each other.
I want to become a member of this discourse community because accounting and the financial world interest me. It seem to come naturally to me as I enjoy working with numbers and I love money. I plan to get my degree in accounting and/or finance and become a CPA (certified public accountant).
