Audience is what controls the diction of the writer. It is
the key to what should and should not be written. Knowledge is what a person or
people know about a specific subject. It is what helps us live our day to day
lives. Knowledge is what gives us the power to know and understand what is
happening in the world. These concepts are what makes a good writer. Writers
must have knowledge about what they are writing about as well as the people
they are writing to. If a writer does not please his or her intended audience,
then the written material is obsolete. This is because it does not serve the
purpose of informing the original audience.
Lunsford believes that an audience is someone
that is “relational and responsive” to the subject itself. I used to think that
knowledge could only be shown through what factual information a person knows
and understands. But I now realize that knowledge is anything known, factual or
not, in a subject area. Knowledge comes from other knowledge. When writing,
knowledge is being created, thus giving knowledge to others. I believe my
definitions are have not changed much since reading these articles, however, I did
begin to understand how closely audience relates to knowledge and its effects
on writing. Generally speaking, audience is who we are and how we communicate
our knowledge of things.
