How do Yancey and Taczak each define reflection? How does Yancey build on others’ scholarship to define reflection? According to both Yancey and Taczak, what does reflection enable writers to do? How might we understand reflection in connection with each of the key terms we have discussed so far—genre, audience, purpose, and discourse community?
Taczak defines reflection as "Reflection is a mode of inquiry: a deliberate way of systematically recalling writing experiences to reframe the current writing· situation". (pg.1) While Yancey claims that students participating within the classroom and acting as "agents of their own learning", she has defined this teaching process as reflection. Yancey Builds on other's by quoting and paraphrasing alternative other sources to further her own ideas, for example on page 19 she quotes a man named William Perry who explains the transformations of a college student and how they become reflective. According to both of the authors the process of reflection allows a student to go back and re-read their own ideas and then build on them b adding more information and revising any mistakes they may notice in their work. Genre correlates to reflection because in order to properly reflect on your writing/work, you must go back and identify what genre you are attempting to write for, and to make sure that your work is consistent with this genre. Audience falls under the category of genre, because each specific genre usually targets a different or specific audience, so while reflecting you should make sure and identify any pieces of information that are irrelevant to the audience you have written for. While reflecting, your text's purpose should be apparent and if it is not that you should definitely revise and you use your reflection to guide and build on the main idea of your work. I would say discourse community is the least important of this list in terms of reflecting due to the fact that your typical discourse community will find a problem in your paper, so no amount of reflecting can allow you to create a perfect paper for discourse community, however it is important to keep in mind the ideas and beliefs of the discourse community you are writing to while reflecting.
