Journal 4
James Gee uses key words such as "acquisition" (acquiring something subconsciously by exposure to models and a process of trial and error and not through being taught) and "learning" (a process that involves conscious knowledge gained through teaching). Although both terms result in one obtaining knowledge, the processes themselves are different. The connections that Gee's article and our class's discussion made were that knowledge is obtainable in various ways and that knowledge of the audience can help an author to write in a certain way or a certain genre. In pediatrics, certain strategies like using a differential diagnosis or combination of medications are examples of the specific "ways of using language, of thinking, and of acting" within the community. After obtaining a doctorate and getting experience in the field one joins this community. Scientific journals and patients' charts are examples of writing done within the community. Scientific journals require a level of knowledge and writing skill very specific to the field. To secure a career in pediatrics has been a longtime goal of mine. Pediatricians get to save the lives of children every day; not only that, but they save the children's parents from having to experience the unsurmountable pain that comes from losing a child. I know that the amount of work that goes into joining this community is unparalleled, however this does not discourage me whatsoever.
