A keyword that I’ve noticed Gee constantly use is discourse. He defines it as a particular community that has its own way of functioning and communicating. Another word that Gee uses often is linguist. The connection between these two terms could be that if you’re a linguist, then you’re in a discourse community. The discourse community that I am interested in researching for project two is psychiatry. The ways that this discourse can distinguish themselves from others is the way they talk. The way they talk can seem confusing or different from the ways other talk because they have gone to medical school and know a lot of medical terminology. One can become a member of this discourse by passing medical school and getting a license to practice. Writing can play a role in this discourse community because they may need to write emails or notes to patients or other doctors. The reason this discourse community interests me is because I find it intriguing how differently people can act if they have a mental disorder and what can help or fix them.
