Journal 4- Victoria Farrar

Gee uses multiple key terms frequently throughout his work. The man term he uses is ‘discourse’. Other terms that frequented his text, included language and social. All these terms intertwine in a specific way. The main term that is connected to these key words is discourse. The definition Gee uses specifically for this term is that discourse is a “socially accepted association among ways of using language, of thinking, and of acting that can be used to identify oneself as a member of a socially meaningful group or social network.” This connects to our class work with genre, audience, etc. because it talks about identifying oneself to a specific group.
For project two, I am interested in looking at Marine Biology. Many aspects of biology go into this group. For someone to identify themselves with the group, they must have a biological background with a love for the sea. Many professionals in this group understand biological terms, as well as things about the sea and what lives there. Marine biology interests me because that is what I would like to have as a career in later years. I love the ocean and have grown up on the beach my whole life so it has been a passion of mine to work with or by the ocean. This interest in Marine Biology will help me in my research for my paper because it is a subject I have a passion for. I am excited to research what type of people come from a Marine Biology career and what they offer to this world.
