Journal 4-Ashley Ambroise

  • Based on Gee's articles notice him focusing on the terms discourse, acquisition and learning. He defines the term discourse as being a way of thinking, acting and use of language shared between individuals which creates a social network. His definition of acquisition is subconsciously acquiring something through models without the process of teaching. Where as learning focuses on the process of teaching. The connections between our class discussion and and Gee's article of discourse is that knowledge is built over time through the process of trial and error, which is a part of Gee's definition of acquisition. If we were to say all knowledge is gained within the classroom, this would be Gee's definition of learning which has less of a performance.
  • The discourse community I am interested in researching is biological research. Biological research has its own discourse being that its language of science, way of thinking is physiological and way of acting is observational distinguishes it from others. This discourse however is simply a master discourse where biological researchers focusing directly on chemical reactions may not think physiologically. One becomes a member of this discourse community by easily finding a biology related topic such as plants, observing and recording their findings. Writing has a definite role in biological research being that information is noted and reports are written. Basing its content on the audience, different genres are prevalent in each report, distinguishing them all from each other.
  • Since science, biology specifically has a mass umbrella of findings, this discourse community interests me. I can use this interest to develop my research project by analyzing how biological scientists come up with results of one specific topic and creating fresh, new ideas based on those same results.
