How do you define "audience" and "knowledge," and how are these concepts important for writers? How do Lunsford and Estrem define these two terms, and what connections do they make between these terms and writing?
Before this reading I would define audience as anyone besides the author that a piece of text is written for. Before the reading I defined knowledge in literature as the maximum amount of information you knew about that you applied to your writings. The response that lunsford gives about audience is a group of people that basically share the same principles and ideas with the author and text. However, Estrem has a different definition for knowledge and believes, “writers use writing to generate knowledge that they didn't have before.” The connections you can make between the two writings are how they both build on each other. With knowledge usually comes an audience you project that knowledge onto to grow further. This is a great way to look at it although it is not always the case but for most people when you are very intelligent people notice and will start to believe more of what you say because you may be very well educated or certified in what you are speaking on.
What do these definitions of knowledge and audience help you to understand about Anzaldua’s text? What does Anzaldua's text contribute to your understanding of audience and knowledge that you hadn’t considered before?
The definitions of knowledge and audience helped me understand the place that Anzaldua was put through. I felt like I was right there next to her as a child feeling insecure stuck in a hard place in between people that hated her for speaking spanish or speaking english. The text helps me understand that you have to understand who you are writing too but also realize that your idea of audience could be different that the readers and you need to be able to account for that in your writing. The other idea of knowledge that I encountered in this writing is the multiple uses of language in writing one text. While you want a consistent flow of one language Anzaldua used the two languages she knows throughout the text to convey her point clearly. She expressed this in a perfect manner giving definitions where needed.
Finally, after reading these three texts, have your definitions of audience and knowledge changed? if so, how? if not, why not? Be prepared to discuss your answers in class and to draw our attention to passages from the texts that support what you’re saying, that confuse you, that are illuminating for you, etc.
Personally my two opinions of knowledge and audience have not changed. The reason being is that so many people interpret things differently. I have my own opinion of these two words in literature and in popular culture both are different but they will never align with everyone's idea of the word. This is also because my idea of audience is literally everyone besides the author because anyone could be your audience if they read what you wrote. On the other hand, knowledge is purely of our own personal creation and everyone has their own knowledge and personally their own definition of what it is for them.
