Journal 3 - Justin Suter

I define audience as people the author intended to read the piece of writing they are constructing. I would define knowledge as information that a reader gains from the text after reading it. These concepts are important for writers because the audience are the people judging your writing and hopefully gaining knowledge from you in the process. Estrem’s view on knowledge as she thinks writers gain their knowledge as the write. Lunsford believes audience is grouped into people who view the text in the same way as the author and almost share ideas. These authors make connections because they both think the audience gains from the knowledge written in the text but at the same time the author is gaining their knowledge writing that text.

Understanding the definitions of audience and knowledge helped me to understand what Anzaldua went through with writing. I felt like it broke down the writing process better for me that not only Anzaldua goes through but also a lot of authors do this and I could appreciate the effort they put in. It also showed me that Anzaldua was a great writer she accomplished what she wanted with her writing.

After reading the three text I think my definitions of audience and knowledge have not changed. I believe that these passages have given me a great understanding of knowledge and audience, defiantly a better understanding then I had before. However, I think my definitions fall in close line with what the readings said as the audience does gain knowledge from reading the text and audience is still the people reading the text, they just were more specific in their definitions.
